Hints and Tips No. 11 Make Sure Your Remote Training Collar has all the Features You Want!
At Bark Control we have recently noticed a lot of customers looking to buy a Dog Training Collar after having already purchased one that did not allow them to upgrade down the track as their needs changed.
For example many farmers or hunters prefer a dog training collar where extra collars can be added down the track. Some brands do not offer this and you are required to buy a whole new e-collar system. Other brands allow you to add another training collar whenever you like at a fraction of the price. The SportDog SD 1825 allows you to expand out to 6 dogs. Adding another collar whenever you like.
The moral is to check into the remote training collar you are thinking of buying, before outlaying any of your hard earned!! As we always say at Bark Control, "Don't hesitate to call. We're here to help!"
"Thank you too for the great support you and your team at Bark Control provide. You are an example of how all businesses should operate, which I guess flows from your experience and confidence in the products you sell." Steve B. NSW.
"Well thanks again for your excellent customer service, the collar arrived yesterday, that was quick, would thoroughly recommend you to anyone for professionalism and great service." Noreen K. Vic.
"I really appreciate your excellent customer service and I know where to shop and recommend to others in the future." Emma C. Qld.
How to Change Your Dogs behaviour through the use of Bark Collars!
Date Updated: 18 May 2010
After reading this article, why not head over to our complete range of Bark Collars for barking dogs
Will my dog still bark when an intruder comes in to my yard? How long will my dog need to wear the bark collar? How often do we need to put the anti bark collar on? All good and relevant questions, but by far the most common question is, “Will the bark collar train my dog to stop barking?”
Unfortunately that is not as simple as it sounds either. Not all dogs have the same temperaments, drive levels and motivations to bark. Therefore it is logical to expect that the effect of a barking collar on one dog will be different to that of another dog.
Even in people, negative reinforcement, such as traffic fines, jail, or corporal punishment etc, will cause individuals to act differently. Some learn to comply on an ongoing basis, while others still break the rules whenever the opportunity arises. While a dogs motivation to bark may be far less sinister than any evil motivating factor in humans, the differences in the way dogs react to the negative motivation of bark collars is in my opinion comparable.
So what can most people expect from their anti barking collar once they place it on their dog? Firstly, most will be surprised at how few corrections your dog will get before recognising that barking is causing the unpleasant correction. This is true for any type of collar whether it be a shock collar or electric collar or alternatively a lemon spray or citronella collar. If the deterrent is strong enough to deter the barking your dog should give it up quickly! If not you need to adjust the correction level if possible or upgrade the collar. Just remember if your dog barks and barks whilst being sprayed with citronella without a care in the world, the first day you put the citronella collar on, you have the wrong product!
Assuming you have the right bark collar and it is getting above your dogs drive level to bark, barking will usually stop fast. In most cases your dog will also soon become aware that the bark collar is causing the correction too! This is fairly common. Most people then realise that the dog resumes normal patterns of behaviour once the anti bark collar is removed. In my opinion this is a good indication that the collar is working appropriately.
I do not think it is appropriate for bark collars to stop a dog barking completely, nor should someone with a barking dog problem expect it. Barking is a very natural thing for a dog to do to express itself under various circumstances and situations, and it would be unfair to expect a dog to quit altogether.
Bark collars work best with a planned approach to solving your barking problem. If for example you have a dog that barks at night at possums, the idea is to put your no bark collar on before going to bed and leave it on for the night. Do this every night for a set period, no less than a month, and do not skip any nights. What you then create is a change in the pattern of behaviour in your dog. Then try leaving the dog without the anti bark collar on for a night. If your does not bark you have effectively used the bark collar to change the dogs behaviour in its reaction to possums. If the dog barks that night, get the collar on again for three months before attempting to leave it off for a second time! In some cases the barking collar may need to go back on the dog if barking resumes. For some dog owners bark collars will become a permanent fashion accessory. It all depends on how driven or motivated your dog is when it comes to barking.
So in wrapping up follow these simple steps:
1.Identify you have a dog barking problem.
2.Attempt to establish what type of bark collar you require. Allow us to help if you are not sure!
3.Upon receiving your bark collar ensure it is fitted and working properly and that the collar deters your dog from barking. If not, contact us immediately to assist you in getting the collar going or upgrading you to a product that will work. This could mean upgrading to an electric bark collar from a citronella bark collar for example.
4.Ensure the anti bark collar goes on consistently during the times you are attempting to deter nuisance barking, over a period of time (e.g. one month).
5.After your set period of time, check to see if your bark collar has changed your dog’s pattern of behaviour. If not establish a longer time frame and repeat.
As you can see the science of bark collars and recommending the right one for your barking dog is not an exact one. Simply put your dog is not like a piece of machinery or a computer where we can recommend a part with complete confidence. However with our experience in dog behaviour and training and our product knowledge, I believe Bark Control can give you the best chance to fix your barking dog problem and fast!
