Alaskan Malamute

The largest of the artic breeds (think Siberian or American Husky), the Malamute arrived in Australia in 1978.  This breed can reach a height of 70cm and weigh as much as 56kg.  They are extremely intelligent to the point of being head strong, so engaging them in obedience training from a young age is important.

The Malamute is a protective breed when it comes to family members, but generally does not display a guarding instinct when it comes to property.  It is important to ensure that they do not display aggression towards humans, again training is a vital factor.

This breed requires significant amounts of regular training and strenuous exercise.  Do not be worried about their coat during exercise as it provides insulation against both heat and cold.  That said, regular grooming is recommended.

Alaskan Malamutes are not known for excessive barking. However, they are known for excessive howling when it comes to being around other dogs or out of boredom.  A great family pet so long as there is a strong leader for them to follow.

Bark Collars For Alaskan Malamutes

Not generally a big barker, the Alaskan Malamute is more renowned for its howling ability. The Malamute has a range of vocalizations that can start off as a whisper and end in a rather vocal howl. Being a very dominant and driven breed Citronella collars are not ideal when trying to control a barking or howling Malamute. In this situation, we highly recommend owners look at a static/electric collar for best results.

As with all Dogs if you have a young pup under 8 months or a dog over 10 years we suggest you call us for expert advice.
