My dogs need Bark Collars but I still want them to bark at night.

Q.  My dogs need bark collars.  At night though, they are pretty good and only really bark when there is something to bark at.  This is reassuring in terms of security.  I guess once they wear these that security is gone if they no longer bark.

A.  That's fine, just have the collars on during the day, as they can only wear the collar for about 10 hours per day.  When you introduce a bark collar, there are a couple of things we like to make you aware of to increase the success;

  1. Separate the dogs when the collar is on for the first couple of hours - this way the dogs won't turn and blame each other when they receive a correction, which means it must be something they have done, which leads to the next point;
  2. It will take your dogs 2 to 3 days to associate their barking with the correction of the collar. They may be a little sooky during this time, but it is a new sensation and new learning curve, then;
  3. Generally, between the first 7 to 10 days the dogs will work out that the collar is part of the process - which is great. At this point the collar becomes as much a deterrent as it is a consequence to barking. So your dogs will know that when the collar is on (during the day), they need to be quiet. However, when the collar is off, they will know they can bark - which helps with the security aspect.

Q.  Now my two don't appear all that clever at times. Is this an understanding all dogs can get!

A.  A work colleague has 2 x dachshunds, a mini and a standard.  The mini is quite clever and the standard is more a class clown, a goofball.  With time they were able to get her to the point where they would just have to show her the collar and she would be quiet.  The standard on the other hand, he understood what the collar meant, but showing him wouldn't be enough of a deterrent, he still needed to feel the weight of the collar around his neck.  So for the most part, he wears the collar turned off - but every little while he will challenge it, so that collar is turned on for a couple of weeks.

Q.  I'm moving in 4 weeks and if barking like they are now occurs, it would be a real issue.  Is it possible that they would have made progress in that time?

A.  If you order it now, it gives your dogs a chance to become familiar with the collars (generally takes about 10 days), which is great because they will understand the collars prior to your move.

Q.  So if I get the bark collars that you suggested is there any exchange if I need a different one or am I required to buy others.  Hope that made sense.

A.  Yes, we have a Performance Guarantee on these bark collars, so you can upgrade them if needed within that timeframe.  There is more info on this in our FAQs section

Q.  Sorry, last question.  Does it come with very good instructions on how to begin the process?

A.  It does, and we also email through a fitting guide.  In addition to this, you can always contact us for more info via chat, email or phone, 1300 668 931. Finally, when you get these collars, start with one dog (separated from the other), start at the lowest level and then place them in a position that will get them barking (someone walking past the fence?), and see how they respond.  If they ignore it go up to the next level and repeat. You are looking for a slight change in body language (an ear flick, head shake or tilt, etc) - their way of saying 'Hey what just happened there?' - that's the best level
