The German Shepherd Breed

The German Shepherd is a medium to large sized working dog and a much-loved pet in many families. Due to their strength, intelligence, trainability, and obedience, German Shepherds have been a reliable dog breed for various types of work including; Disability Assistance, Search & Rescue, and Police & Military roles.

German Shepherds have an eagerness to please and a willingness to learn. Curious in nature, these dogs make the perfect guard dog and loyal companions however they can be overprotective of their owners/family which means obedience training from a young age is a must. When owning a German Shepherd as a pet it's important to remember that they have a high drive and will need exercise and mental stimulation daily.

Bark Collars For German Shepherds

For healthy German Shepherd dogs above 6 months, we only recommend manual-set static electric bark collars. Static electric collars are the best form of bark control because they deliver the most accurate and consistent form of correction that matches their drive to bark.

We do not recommend citronella spray collars for German Shepherd Dogs above 6 months. Spray collars, although slightly unpleasant, are not a strong enough deterrent to control a German Shepherd's barking. You can find our product recommendations in the 'Collar Recommendation Guide' below.

Tip: Start with the collar on level one. If your dog continues to bark through the correction, increase the stimulation strength one level at a time until you reach a level that matches your dog's drive.

For German Shepherd puppies under 6 months old

Generally, we don't recommend using any form of bark control for dogs under 6 months old because puppies still need to be puppies, however, if your dog is above 3 months, and has a serious barking problem, a citronella spray collar is a good place to start. If your dog's excessive barking is still an issue as they get older, we recommend switching to a static electric bark collar. You can find our collar recommendations for German Shepherd puppies under 6 months at the bottom of the page.
