GPS Dog Containment Without Boundary Wire
The Dogtra GPS Fence is a wire-free dog containment system for larger open properties where running boundary wire is difficult or not practical. Instead of installing wire around the property, you create a virtual fence in the Dogtra GPS Fence app, then the collar stores the boundary and works independently once setup is complete.
It is designed for outdoor use, with no subscription fees, no buried wire, and no base station required during normal operation. It is best suited to open acreage properties where the dog has clear sky view and the boundary does not need to sit exactly on a fence line.
Create the fence from your phone instead of digging, trenching or running wire around the property.
The collar uses GPS containment only. There is no live tracking subscription or ongoing app fee.
Best for open properties over 3,000m² (3/4 acre) where the collar has reliable access to GPS signal.
Important Suitability Note
GPS fences are not suitable for every property or dog. They work best on larger, open blocks with low tree cover and clear sky view. They are not the best choice for small suburban yards, narrow side access areas, or exact fence-line control. It is quite bulky, so it is not ideal for small dogs under 7kg or neck sizes under 25cm.
If you need the most accurate and consistent containment boundary, especially near roads, livestock, neighbours, driveways, dams or existing fencing, a wired dog fence is usually the stronger option. GPS fences are more convenient to set up, but they do involve more compromise around accuracy, charging and signal conditions.

- Charge the collar daily or after each full day of use.
- Use only on suitable outdoor properties with reliable GPS signal.
- Use training flags and proper boundary training so your dog understands the safe area.
- Remove the collar when the dog is inside, travelling, crated, or under cover.
Dogtra GPS Fence FAQs
Does the Dogtra GPS Fence track my dog?
No. This is a GPS containment system, not a live GPS tracking collar. It uses GPS to manage the virtual fence boundary but does not provide real-time tracking or notifications.
Does it need a monthly subscription?
No. The Dogtra GPS Fence does not require a monthly subscription fee.
Can I use it on a small suburban block?
Usually not. GPS fences are best suited to larger open properties over 3,000m². For small yards, narrow blocks or exact fence-line control, a wired dog fence is normally the better option.
Can the collar be worn indoors?
No. Remove the collar when your dog goes indoors, into a shed, under heavy cover or into any area where GPS signal may be unreliable.
How often does the collar need charging?
Plan to charge the collar daily or after each full day of use. GPS collars use more power than standard wired fence collars.
Do I still need to train my dog?
Yes. Training is essential. Your dog must learn where the boundary is and how to respond to the warning cues. Training flags are recommended so the dog has a clear visual marker during the learning stage.
