Hints and Tips No. 11  Make Sure Your Remote Training Collar has all the Features You Want!

At Bark Control we have recently noticed a lot of customers looking to buy a Dog Training Collar after having already purchased one that did not allow them to upgrade down the track as their needs changed.

For example many farmers or hunters prefer a dog training collar where extra collars can be added down the track.  Some brands do not offer this and you are required to buy a whole new e-collar system.  Other brands allow you to add another training collar whenever you like at a fraction of the price.  The SportDog SD 1825 allows you to expand out to 6 dogs.  Adding another collar whenever you like.

The moral is to check into the remote training collar you are thinking of buying, before outlaying any of your hard earned!!  As we always say at Bark Control, "Don't hesitate to call.  We're here to help!"

Why do I Need to Train My Dog to Use an Electric Dog Fence?

Installing your Dog Containment System is Only Part of the Process!!

Date Updated: 12 May 2010

So why is the training so important once you have installed your dog containment fence? The simple answer is we want to teach the dog that approaching the restricted zone of your dog fence is to be avoided, and that staying in the safe zone is the place to be! Imagine if you stick your containment system up and whack on the collar and just leave your dog to it. The first thing that may occur after your dog receives the static correction is that it runs further into the restricted area and receives more corrections. It may continue to get further static pulses as it tries to figure out where it can go to avoid more corrections.   Alternatively, if you have no structural fence, your dog runs straight through the restricted area to the outside world. This defeats the purpose of having an electric dog fence system in the first place.

Its common sense to assume your dog will be pointing forward when first heading to the restricted area of any electronic dog fence system, from inside your yard or property. The first reaction for nearly all dogs at the point of receiving the correction and getting a startle is to move forward, in the way that it is facing. This will then put them into the restricted area or beyond it as discussed. The idea is to have the dog move back not forwards. So how do we get them to move back rather than go forward??...Training!!

All radio fence systems for dogs come with detailed training instructions or DVDs that explain how to train your dog to live within its new escape proof surrounds. Be sure to read these instructions carefully and follow them. There may be subtle variations in training methods but the goal is the same ... activate the warning tone or correction and move back to the safe zone not forwards.  When it comes to electronic dog fences this is the key!!

If you are on a property that has no physical fences or boundaries you need to pay extra attention to training your dog to react to an electric dog fence. I call any area that has these unfenced areas “run through zones”. This is any area where the dog can escape by running straight through the boundary without coming to a stop to either dig or climb a fence or other structure. If you have run through zones I always recommend getting a dog containment fence that has adjustable collar settings in case you need to increase the correction level. Whatever your dog fence, getting your dog to turn around is vitally important when you have run through zones so make sure you do the training.

Remember that your electric dog fence is there to save your dog’s life. However installing your containment system is only part of the process of keeping your escaping dog in your property.

In the next few weeks I will outline my recommended training process for teaching your dog to understand how to co-exist with a radio fence.
